About Us

The name Gmund is taken from the name of the town in Austria where Doctor Porsche and his family began to build cars after the Second World War. The town of Gmund is in the southern province Carinthia, 25 miles north of the Italian border, at the foot of the Reisseck Mountains. Where the Malta and Lieser rivers come together is the gravely river bed which gave Gmund its name (two rivers that come together).

What could be more appropriate than to name our company Gmund Cars after the town where Doctor Porsche and his son Ferry decided to build their first fifty cars after the war. German industry had been destroyed, social life was in disarray, and materials were in short supply, but Porsche gathered a handful of workers and a loyal group of designers to begin work on their new sporting automobile.

The very first Porsche was said to have been completed on June 8, 1948 and the number 356 which became the first Porsche roadster or Sports Cabriolet (number 356-001) was so named because the design was actually the 356th design off the Porsche drawing boards. This actual car is now restored and on display in the Porsche museum in Stuttgart.

It wasn’t until early 1950 that the factory moved from Gmund to Zuffenhausen, Stuttgart. The original plan in 1949 was to produce a total of 500 cars of the 356 design. What an underestimation when you consider that over 78,000 were produced by 1965 when the last 356 rolled out of the factory.

Sales

Our aim is to supply our customers with the highest quality car possible at an affordable price. Before we buy a car we thoroughly check out its history, the records on HPI, we even measure the thickness of it’s paint, to ensure we know the car has been looked after properly by the previous owners.

Once here it takes about a week for us to prepare the car for sale, we have it inspected and MOT’d, then serviced and repaired as necessary before spending 2-3 days fully detailing the paintwork, underside and interior using Swissvax Car Care products(See www.swissvax.co.uk)

The cars are then displayed in our indoor showroom and ready for test drives and the next lucky owner to drive away.

Part Exchange

We are fully capable of taking almost any make and model of car into part exchange, once we get all the necessary details on your car (ie, registration number, chassis number, current mileage etc) we are in a position to give you within a few hours the trade-in value we can give for your car. Finance

We work closely with a local finance broker and can offer tailor made finance packages to get you into your dream car. Hire purchase, PCP, Leasing and Lease purchase options are all available.
